Herri met de Bles

Herri met de Bles was born around 1510 at Bouvignes near Dinant. He was listed as a free master in Antwerp in 1535 and spent his career there. Some sources suggest he later settled in Italy, where he was known as Civetta, or little owl. This name originated from the claim that he hid an owl in his work as a secret signature. His own name, Met de Bles, means with the white forelock.

Biography

His working process involved sketching the layout of a scene before adding figures. He often used an undulating S-curve to arrange elements across his compositions. His technique featured tiny, loosely applied brushstrokes that were blended to avoid sharp shadows. We sell fine art prints of his work, including Landscape with Saint John the Baptist, Landschap met Kruisdraging, and The Temptation of Saint Anthony.
