This circular composition by Herri met de Bles depicts the biblical Garden of Eden. The artist, a prominent figure in the development of the world landscape genre, employs a high vantage point to survey the terrain. The scene transitions from the immediate foreground, where Adam and Eve are positioned near the Tree of Knowledge, to a distant, craggy mountain range that fades into a pale blue horizon.
Bles fills the foreground with diverse fauna and narrative vignettes. An angel guides the first couple, while other figures inhabit the wooded areas. The central architectural element, a slender, ornate fountain or tower, provides a vertical counterpoint to the expansive horizontal sweep of the valley. The artist uses a characteristic palette of deep greens and earthy browns, punctuated by the cooler tones of the distant peaks.
The circular format, or tondo, influences the composition, as the surrounding border frames the scene like a window.
