Jan Thorn Prikker
Jan Thorn Prikker started in the realist tradition of the Hague School before a shift in 1895. He decided to abandon fine art for its own sake to put his skills to the service of the people. This led him to collaborate with Henry van de Velde and move to Germany. In 1904, he became a professor at the Krefeld Kunstgewerbeschule. He spent much of his later career in Germany, where he applied his designs to large-scale architectural projects.

His style is defined by a linear approach influenced by Jan Toorop and early Flemish painters. In works like Madonna among the Tulips, Jan Thorn Prikker used French Cloisonnism to divide the surface into decorative zones. He often dematerialised figures, turning them into planar ornaments that merged with their surroundings. This Symbolism aimed to capture the essence of a subject, such as a mystical reality, rather than its literal appearance. His use of colour was often symbolic, intended to convey specific sentiments.
Modern collectors value the strong graphic quality of his work. His output bridges the gap between painting and applied arts like stained glass or mosaics. Posters like the Dutch Art Exhibition in Krefeld demonstrate his use of Art Nouveau curves and balanced compositions. These prints offer a sophisticated aesthetic for contemporary interiors. They provide a link between the late nineteenth-century Symbolist movement and the functional design of the twentieth century.
