Marie Ellenrieder

Marie Ellenrieder was the first woman to gain admission to a German art academy. In 1813, she entered the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, which was an exceptional achievement for a female artist at the time. While she began her career as a portraitist, a journey to Rome between 1822 and 1824 altered her trajectory. There she encountered the Nazarenes. This group of German artists sought to revive the techniques and spiritual focus of the early Renaissance. She was later appointed as a court painter in Baden.

Biography

Her work is defined by a clear, linear style and a subdued colour palette. Ellenrieder rejected the dramatic excesses of the Baroque in favour of clarity. She often painted religious subjects, such as Jesus Among the Children, using oil on paper or canvas to create images with a quiet atmosphere. This Nazarene influence is visible in her precise draughtsmanship and the calm expressions of her subjects. Her compositions avoid clutter and focus on the emotional state of the figures.

Modern collectors value Ellenrieder for her technical precision and the stillness her work brings to a room. Her portraits, like Young Girl Praying, offer a sense of order and historical continuity. These prints provide a connection to the 19th-century German Romantic movement. The simplicity of her compositions allows her work to sit comfortably alongside traditional or contemporary interiors. These prints offer a calm alternative to more chaotic modern designs.
