Pieter van Sompel
Pieter van Sompel was a specialist in the Haarlem school of engraving. He was a pupil of Pieter Soutman, who had worked in the studio of Peter Paul Rubens. While many contemporaries focused on local Dutch subjects, van Sompel documented the Habsburg dynasty. His portraits recorded the lineage of this powerful family.

He maintained a controlled aesthetic that suited his royal subjects. His mythological scenes demonstrate his ability to manage complex groups of figures within a single frame.
