Willem de Famars Testas
- Orientalism
Willem de Famars Testas joined a scientific expedition to Egypt in 1858 led by the archaeologist Émile Prisse d'Avennes. He spent two years documenting monuments and daily life under rigorous conditions. Many artists painted the East from studios in Europe, but Testas worked directly from his observations in the field. This experience provided him with a collection of sketches that he used for his entire career.

Biography
The sketches focus on the human element within the Egyptian environment. Testas often depicted soldiers and funeral processions. These sketches show a clear interest in the structure of buildings and the specific clothing of the people he encountered. The Dutch artist avoided the exaggerated drama found in many Orientalist paintings. He preferred to capture quiet moments like men sleeping or figures by a rowing boat.
Collectors value these sketches for their observational quality and neutral colour palettes. The compositions feel candid and less staged than typical nineteenth-century academic art. Pieces like Egyptische huizen, en palmen offer a calm, architectural aesthetic. These sketches provide a window into a specific historical period through the eyes of a disciplined draughtsman.
