National Trust

Swindon, United Kingdom · 123 artists in catalogue

The National Trust's art collection began with the bequest of businessman and collector Henry Hill, who, by the time of his death in 1882, owned over 680 works of art and sculpture. Hill's collection is notable for its scale, rivalling that of the National Gallery at the time. The collection is particularly strong in 19th-century paintings, including landscapes and domestic scenes. Today, the National Trust collection is spread across many of its properties, offering visitors a glimpse into the tastes of the Victorian middle class.
