Ben Nicholson (1894-1982) was a British artist known for his abstract compositions and still-life paintings. Nicholson's work often explored the relationships between form, space, and colour, drawing inspiration from Cubism and Constructivism. He developed a distinctive style characterised by simplified shapes, geometric forms, and a muted palette. Nicholson was married to Barbara Hepworth from 1938 to 1951. '1945 (Still Life)' exemplifies Nicholson's mature style. The composition features a collection of everyday objects, such as cups and bottles, rendered in a semi-abstract manner. The objects are depicted using simplified geometric shapes and overlapping planes, creating a sense of depth and spatial ambiguity.
