A semi-abstract still life by British artist Ben Nicholson, '1945 (Still Life)' features simplified geometric shapes and overlapping planes in a restrained palette of white, grey, brown, and yellow.
Ben Nicholson (1894-1982) was a British artist known for his abstract compositions and still-life paintings. Nicholson's work often explored the relationships between form, space, and colour, drawing inspiration from Cubism and Constructivism. He developed a distinctive style characterised by simplified shapes, geometric forms, and a muted palette. Nicholson was married to Barbara Hepworth from 1938 to 1951. '1945 (Still Life)' exemplifies Nicholson's mature style. The composition features a collection of everyday objects, such as cups and bottles, rendered in a semi-abstract manner. The objects are depicted using simplified geometric shapes and overlapping planes, creating a sense of depth and spatial ambiguity. The colour palette is restrained, with subtle variations of white, grey, brown, and yellow. The overall effect is one of understated elegance and quiet contemplation. The painting reflects Nicholson's interest in exploring the formal qualities of art, as well as his ability to find beauty in the ordinary.
