A 1967 abstract composition by Fong Chung-Ray, blending traditional ink techniques with modern acrylic textures to explore form and space.
Fong Chung-Ray, a member of the influential Fifth Moon Group, produced this work in 1967. The piece reflects the artist's engagement with the modernisation of traditional Chinese ink painting. By incorporating acrylics alongside traditional ink, Fong creates a dialogue between Eastern calligraphic traditions and Western abstract expressionist techniques.
The composition relies on the interplay of heavy, saturated black forms against a textured, neutral ground. These dark, gestural shapes suggest the weight and movement of ink on paper, yet the application reveals a deliberate, experimental approach to surface. The artist employs a technique involving the peeling of paint or the use of unconventional tools to create the mottled, weathered effects visible across the surface. This process results in a visual tension between the controlled application of pigment and the unpredictable nature of the medium.
Fong's work from this period often avoids explicit representation, focusing instead on the energy of the brushstroke and the physical properties of the materials. The muted palette of greys, blacks, and ochre tones emphasises the structural qualities of the composition. By stripping away figurative elements, the artist invites the viewer to consider the relationship between space, void, and form. This approach aligns with the broader goals of the Fifth Moon Group, which sought to revitalise Chinese art by integrating contemporary global aesthetics with the philosophical foundations of ink painting. The work remains a clear example of the artist's ability to balance historical technique with a modern, abstract sensibility.
