A detailed graphite study by Theo Colenbrander from 1920, featuring floral motifs and vessel profiles for ceramic design.
This graphite study by Theo Colenbrander offers a direct view into the working process of a designer deeply engaged with the decorative arts. Dated 1920, the sheet functions as a working document, capturing the artist's exploration of floral motifs intended for ceramic application. Colenbrander, a significant figure in Dutch design, was known for his unconventional approach to form and ornament, often moving away from strict realism toward a more fluid, stylised interpretation of nature.
The composition is organised as a series of sketches, with various flower heads and foliage studies scattered across the page. To the right, the artist provides technical guidance through six half-profiles of vessel forms, including vases and small bowls. These outlines are annotated with notes regarding dimensions and colour, providing a clear indication of how these two-dimensional drawings were intended to translate into three-dimensional objects. The line quality is thin and exploratory, reflecting the immediacy of a designer sketching ideas directly onto paper.
Colenbrander's work often prioritised the relationship between the object's silhouette and its surface decoration. In this study, the floral elements are not rendered with botanical precision but rather with a focus on their rhythmic potential as decorative patterns. The inclusion of handwritten notes, dates, and structural lines reveals the practical nature of the document, which served as a bridge between initial concept and final production. This piece provides an authentic look at the methodology of a designer who helped shape the aesthetic of Dutch ceramics in the early twentieth century. It is a document of creative labour, showing the transition from abstract floral observation to the structured requirements of industrial or studio pottery design.
