A grid of thirty-six graphic ink illustrations by Dutch artist Pieter Holstein, featuring a diverse array of domestic objects, abstract patterns, and figures.
This work by Dutch artist Pieter Holstein presents a grid of thirty-six individual panels, each containing a distinct graphic motif. Executed in black ink on a white ground, the composition relies on the stark contrast between positive and negative space. The imagery is eclectic, ranging from domestic objects, such as a citrus press and a bowl with a spoon, to abstract patterns, human figures, and textual elements like the words 'YES' and 'NO'.
Holstein employs a direct, unadorned line quality that avoids unnecessary detail. The panels function as a visual inventory, where the juxtaposition of disparate subjects creates a sense of narrative ambiguity. Some squares feature organic forms, such as spirals or textured surfaces, while others depict recognisable items or anatomical fragments like eyes. The repetition of the grid structure provides a sense of order to the otherwise chaotic variety of subjects. This approach invites the viewer to consider the relationships between the individual icons, rather than seeking a singular, unified theme. The work reflects a fascination with the semiotics of everyday objects and the way simple graphic marks can convey meaning. By stripping away colour and depth, Holstein focuses entirely on the silhouette and the gesture of the mark-making process. The result is a collection of visual notes that operate like a personal lexicon, documenting the artist's observations and conceptual interests in a systematic, yet playful, arrangement.
