A grid of thirty-six graphic ink and wash vignettes by Dutch artist Pieter Holstein, featuring a diverse array of symbolic and everyday imagery.
Pieter Holstein is a Dutch artist known for his graphic work, which often employs a grid structure to organise disparate, often surreal or mundane imagery. This piece, titled 36 voorstellingen, waaronder engel, presents a collection of thirty-six individual panels arranged in a six-by-six grid. Each square functions as a self-contained vignette, executed in high-contrast black ink and wash. The subjects range from the recognisable, such as a tennis player, a stack of books, and an inkwell, to more abstract or cryptic forms, including an angel, facial profiles, and organic, swirling patterns.
The work reflects Holstein's interest in the juxtaposition of signs and symbols. By placing these images in a rigid grid, the artist removes them from a traditional narrative context, forcing the viewer to consider the relationship between individual squares. The stark black-and-white palette emphasises the graphic quality of the lines and the varying density of the ink washes. Some panels are dominated by solid black shapes, while others rely on thin, descriptive lines to define their subject. This variation in tone and mark-making creates a rhythmic visual experience across the entire sheet.
Holstein often incorporates elements of humour and irony into his work, and this piece is no exception. The inclusion of an angel alongside everyday objects like a cigarette or a tennis racket suggests a playful approach to iconography. The work does not seek to provide a unified message, but rather invites the viewer to interpret the individual components and their collective arrangement. As a fine art print, this piece retains the immediacy and raw quality of the original ink drawings, making it a compelling example of Holstein's graphic practice.
