A grid of thirty-six graphic ink illustrations by Dutch artist Pieter Holstein, featuring a diverse array of symbolic and everyday motifs.
Pieter Holstein, a Dutch artist known for his graphic approach to visual storytelling, presents a grid of thirty-six distinct images in this work. The composition functions as a visual catalogue of motifs, ranging from the mundane to the surreal. Among these panels, the artist includes a depiction of a salt cellar, which provides the work with its descriptive title. The collection of images operates through a system of contrast, utilising black ink against white paper to define forms that vary between representational figures and abstract patterns.
Each cell within the grid acts as an independent unit of thought. Some panels contain human figures, such as a person jumping rope or a silhouette with arms outstretched, while others focus on natural elements like trees, birds, or organic shapes. The repetition of the grid structure imposes a sense of order upon the disparate subjects. Holstein employs a direct, unadorned line quality, which removes unnecessary detail and focuses the viewer on the essential shape of each object. The work avoids a singular narrative, instead inviting the viewer to observe the relationships between the individual icons. By placing a domestic object like a salt cellar alongside more enigmatic symbols, Holstein encourages a re-evaluation of everyday items within an artistic context. The work is a study in visual economy, where the power of the image is derived from its simplicity and the rhythmic arrangement of the grid.
