An elegant Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu, depicting a woman carrying floral buckets with the characteristic bold line work of the early Torii school.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu depicts a woman carrying two buckets of flowers suspended from a pole across her shoulders. As a member of the Torii school, Kiyomasu was instrumental in the early development of Ukiyo-e, a genre that captured the transient pleasures of Edo-period urban life. The Torii school is particularly associated with the promotion of Kabuki theatre, and this print reflects the stylised, theatrical aesthetic common to the period.
The figure is rendered with the bold, sweeping lines characteristic of the early Torii style. Her kimono features subtle patterns, while the flowers in the buckets are delineated with delicate colour applications. The composition is balanced, with the weight of the buckets providing a symmetrical frame for the central figure. The artist employs a limited palette, allowing the focus to remain on the posture and the elegant arrangement of the floral elements. The background is left largely empty, a common feature in early Ukiyo-e prints, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the subject.
This work is a fine example of the 'bijin-ga' tradition, or pictures of beautiful women, which became a staple of Japanese printmaking. The print demonstrates the technical constraints and artistic possibilities of the early eighteenth-century woodblock medium, where hand-colouring or limited block-colouring was often used to add detail to the printed line. The figure's expression is serene, and her movement is captured with a sense of grace. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the era, where the depiction of everyday figures was elevated through careful composition and line work. It remains a representative piece of the early Ukiyo-e movement, reflecting the transition from simple black-and-white prints to the more nuanced, multi-coloured works that would follow later in the century.
