A precise and atmospheric 1696 still life by Adriaen Coorte, featuring wild strawberries in an earthenware bowl on a stone plinth.
Adriaen Coorte remains a singular figure within the Dutch Golden Age. Unlike his contemporaries who favoured elaborate, crowded compositions, Coorte focused on modest subjects presented with extreme clarity. This work, dated 1696, displays his characteristic approach: a simple earthenware bowl filled with wild strawberries, set against a dark, indeterminate background. The composition relies on the contrast between the organic, textured fruit and the rigid, geometric stone plinth.
The artist pays close attention to the physical properties of his subjects. The strawberries vary in ripeness, with some showing pale, unripened patches, while others display a deep, saturated red. A small sprig of the plant, complete with delicate white blossoms and leaves, rests on the edge of the stone, providing a sense of natural spontaneity. The light source is directed from the left, casting soft shadows that define the volume of the bowl and the individual berries.
Coorte worked primarily in Middelburg, far from the major artistic centres of Amsterdam or Haarlem. His output is small, consisting of approximately 110 known paintings. These works often feature single fruits, vegetables, or shells, arranged with a precision that borders on the scientific. By isolating these objects, he invites the viewer to observe the subtle details of nature that might otherwise be overlooked in a more complex arrangement. The dark, atmospheric background serves to push the subject forward, ensuring that the focus remains entirely on the tactile quality of the fruit. This print captures the quietude and technical control that define Coorte's contribution to the still life tradition.
