A moody, atmospheric still life featuring strawberries in a white bowl, painted by the Dutch artist Margaretha Roosenboom.
Margaretha Roosenboom was a prominent figure in the Dutch art scene during the late nineteenth century, known for her focus on floral and fruit compositions. This oval-formatted work captures a collection of strawberries resting in a shallow white dish. The composition is set against a dark, moody background, which allows the warm, red tones of the fruit to emerge with clarity.
Roosenboom applies paint with a focus on texture, particularly in the rendering of the strawberries and the reflective surface of the bowl. The lighting is directed, creating soft highlights on the edges of the dish and the fruit, while the surrounding space remains in shadow. This approach to light and shadow is characteristic of her style, which often prioritised the tactile quality of her subjects over complex narrative elements.
Unlike the hyper-detailed botanical illustrations of earlier periods, this work demonstrates a more painterly, atmospheric approach. The brushwork is deliberate, capturing the organic forms of the strawberries and the accompanying leaves with a sense of immediacy. The choice of an oval frame adds a classical, refined quality to the presentation, common in the decorative still life paintings of the era.
As a member of a family of artists, Roosenboom developed a distinct technical proficiency that allowed her to excel in a genre often dominated by male contemporaries. Her work remains a clear example of the Dutch tradition of still life painting, adapted to the aesthetic sensibilities of the late nineteenth century. This print reproduces the subtle tonal variations of the original oil painting, maintaining the balance between the dark, muted background and the concentrated colour of the fruit.
