Adrien Dauzats, a French painter known for his travels through the Near East, produced this work in 1839. The painting captures a bustling scene in Cairo, focusing on the architectural grandeur of the city. The composition is anchored by the towering minarets and the dome of a mosque, which rise against a sky filled with shifting, painterly clouds. Below, the bazaar is depicted with a sense of immediacy, using loose brushwork to suggest the awnings, stalls, and figures gathered in the shade.

Dauzats travelled extensively with the Baron Taylor, documenting various sites across Egypt, Syria, and Palestine. His approach to these subjects often prioritised the interplay of light and shadow on stone surfaces, as seen in the warm, sun-drenched walls of the buildings on the right. The artist employs a palette of ochre, terracotta, and soft blues to convey the heat and atmosphere of the Egyptian climate.
