A dramatic Neoclassical ink and wash drawing depicting a Roman centurion seeking protection from Marc Antony during a revolt.
This work by Alexandre-Evariste Fragonard depicts a dramatic episode from Roman history. The composition focuses on a centurion seeking refuge at the feet of Marc Antony, who stands with authority amidst a chaotic scene of sedition. The artist employs a frieze-like arrangement, reminiscent of classical bas-reliefs, which directs the viewer's eye across the horizontal plane. The figures are rendered with precise, clean lines, typical of the Neoclassical style that dominated French academic art during the early nineteenth century.
Fragonard uses a monochromatic palette of ink and wash to create depth and volume. The stark contrast between the dark background and the illuminated figures emphasises the tension of the moment. The centurion, positioned in a vulnerable, kneeling posture, contrasts sharply with the upright, composed figure of Marc Antony. To the right, a small altar featuring a griffin provides a sense of place and historical context, grounding the narrative in the visual language of antiquity.
The artist, son of the famous Jean-Honoré Fragonard, developed a distinct approach that favoured historical subjects and rigorous draughtsmanship. This piece demonstrates his ability to convey complex human emotions through gesture and posture. The soldiers to the left, caught in mid-motion, add a sense of urgency and danger to the scene. The work functions as a study of power dynamics and human desperation, captured through the disciplined application of ink wash. It remains a clear example of the period's fascination with Roman history as a vehicle for exploring moral and political themes.
