A detailed oil painting by James Ward featuring a chestnut stallion set against the atmospheric grounds of Powis Castle.
James Ward, a prominent figure in British animal painting during the early nineteenth century, produced this work during a period when the genre moved beyond simple portraiture into the realm of Romantic expression. The painting depicts a chestnut stallion standing in a commanding pose, its musculature rendered with anatomical precision. Ward, who began his career as an engraver, brought a technical rigour to his oil paintings that allowed for the fine definition of the horse's coat and the flowing texture of its mane and tail.
The setting, the grounds of Powis Castle, provides a backdrop that balances the animal's physical presence with the atmospheric conditions of the Welsh countryside. The sky is filled with turbulent, shifting clouds, a hallmark of the Romantic interest in the power of nature. The castle itself is visible in the distance, grounded in the rolling terrain. Ward uses a palette dominated by earthy tones, ochres, and deep browns, which unify the subject with the environment. The light catches the stallion's flank, creating a sense of volume and movement that contrasts with the more muted, distant view of the estate.
Ward was known for his ability to capture the spirit of his animal subjects, often imbuing them with a sense of nobility. This work reflects his interest in the relationship between livestock and the landed estates of Britain. By placing the stallion on a slight rise, he elevates the animal, making it the primary focus of the composition. The brushwork is controlled yet expressive, particularly in the treatment of the sky and the grassy foreground. This print captures the texture of the original canvas, offering a clear view of Ward's approach to light and form within the tradition of British sporting and animal art.
