A portrait of a Choctaw woman by George Catlin, painted in 1834 during his travels through the American West.
George Catlin produced this portrait during his 1834 expedition into the territory of the Choctaw people. The subject is depicted in profile, a common compositional choice in Catlin's documentation of North American Indigenous peoples. Her attire consists of a light-coloured garment, complemented by delicate beadwork necklaces and silver-toned ear ornaments. The artist applied paint with a visible, fluid brushwork, particularly evident in the rendering of the fabric and the soft, atmospheric background.
Catlin travelled extensively throughout the American West, aiming to record the appearance and customs of various tribes. His approach combined ethnographic observation with the conventions of nineteenth-century portraiture. The subject's face features subtle applications of pigment, reflecting traditional adornment practices. The lighting is soft, focusing attention on the profile and the specific details of her jewellery. This work is part of the extensive collection of paintings Catlin created to document the lives of Indigenous people before the rapid expansion of European-American settlement.
As a historical record, the painting provides insight into the material culture of the Choctaw during the early nineteenth century. The neutral, muted background ensures that the figure remains the primary focus, allowing the viewer to observe the specific details of her clothing and personal ornamentation. Catlin's work remains a primary source for understanding the visual history of the period, capturing individuals with a directness that avoids excessive idealisation. The portrait is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, reflecting its status within the artist's broader body of work documenting the American frontier.
