A 1746 woodblock print by Ooka Shunboku featuring delicate plum blossoms, taken from his instructional manual on Chinese painting styles.
This woodblock print originates from the Minchō shiken, or A Collection of Lively Sketches of the Ming Dynasty, published in 1746 by the Osaka-based artist Ooka Shunboku. Shunboku was a significant figure in the dissemination of Chinese painting styles within Japan during the Edo period. His work often functioned as a manual for students, providing clear examples of brush techniques and compositions derived from Chinese masters.
The image displays a study of plum blossoms, a subject of great cultural weight in East Asian art. The composition is balanced across two pages, featuring a gnarled, textured branch that extends across the right side, while a smaller, younger branch occupies the lower left. The blossoms are rendered in soft pinks and reds, with yellow centres, contrasting against the muted, earthy tones of the branches. The use of negative space is deliberate, allowing the viewer to focus on the specific form and arrangement of the flowers.
Shunboku’s approach here is instructional. He captures the essence of the plum blossom through simplified, clear forms rather than hyper-realistic detail. The inclusion of calligraphy on the left page provides a poetic accompaniment, typical of the literati tradition that Shunboku sought to introduce to a wider Japanese audience. The print reflects the technical precision of 18th-century Japanese woodblock printing, where the registration of colour blocks and the quality of the paper were paramount. This piece offers a glimpse into the pedagogical methods of the era, where the study of nature was inextricably linked to the study of historical artistic precedents.
