Gino Severini, an Italian painter based in Paris, occupied a unique position within the Futurist movement. While his contemporaries often focused on the mechanical speed of modern life, Severini maintained a fascination with the human form, particularly the kinetic energy of dance. This work demonstrates his synthesis of Futurist dynamism and the structural rigour of Cubism.

The composition is constructed through a series of intersecting geometric planes and sharp, angular lines. Rather than depicting a static figure, Severini breaks the dancer into a sequence of overlapping shapes, suggesting movement through space and time.
