A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenobu, depicting a flower vendor with delicate colour washes and elegant line work.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenobu depicts a flower vendor, a common subject within the Ukiyo-e tradition of the Edo period. Shigenobu, also known as Ishikawa Toyonobu, was a significant figure in the development of the benizuri-e, or rose-printed, style. This technique allowed for the addition of limited colour, typically pink and green, to the traditional black-and-white ink prints.
The composition features a central figure carrying a bamboo pole across her shoulders, from which two baskets of flowers are suspended. The vendor is dressed in a patterned kimono, with the fabric design echoing the floral theme of her wares. The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the contours of the figure and the structure of the bamboo baskets. The background remains largely unadorned, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the vendor and the botanical elements.
Shigenobu was known for his tall, slender figures, a stylistic choice that adds a sense of grace to the composition. The use of colour is restrained, applied in soft washes that complement the ink lines rather than overwhelming them. This print provides a glimpse into the daily life of Edo, capturing a moment of commerce that is elevated through the aesthetic conventions of the time. The work reflects the technical capabilities of mid-eighteenth-century printmaking, where the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer resulted in refined visual narratives. The floral motifs are rendered with a degree of stylisation, prioritising decorative harmony over strict botanical accuracy. This piece is a representative example of the transition from early monochrome prints to the more complex polychrome works that would define the later stages of the Ukiyo-e movement.
