A fine engraving by Martin Schongauer depicting a Foolish Virgin, showcasing the technical precision of Northern Renaissance printmaking.
Martin Schongauer was a master of the burin, and this engraving of a Foolish Virgin demonstrates his technical precision. The work belongs to a series depicting the ten virgins from the biblical parable. Schongauer characterises the figure with a distinct sense of individuality, moving away from the rigid iconographic styles of the earlier fifteenth century.
The composition focuses on the half-length figure of a young woman. She holds an overturned lamp, a symbol of her lack of preparation. Schongauer uses fine, parallel lines to create volume in the drapery of her sleeves and the soft contours of her face. The hatching techniques allow for subtle gradations of light and shadow, giving the figure a tangible presence. Her expression is one of quiet contemplation, which contrasts with the narrative implications of her status as a foolish virgin.
Schongauer's influence on the development of printmaking in the Holy Roman Empire was considerable. His ability to render textures, from the smooth skin of the subject to the folds of her garment, shows an acute observation of the physical world. The monogram M+S is visible at the base of the print, a mark that became synonymous with quality in the print trade of the late Gothic period. This engraving provides an example of the shift towards humanistic portraiture within religious subject matter. The attention to detail in the hair and the structure of the lamp reflects the artist's background as a goldsmith, where precision was a requirement of the craft. Collectors of early modern prints value this work for its clarity of line and the balance between decorative elements and psychological depth.
