Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-1682) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, and etcher. He is considered one of the foremost landscape artists of the Dutch Golden Age. Ruisdael's landscapes are characterised by their dramatic skies, detailed rendering of nature, and a sense of melancholy. He influenced generations of landscape painters. The forest floor is partially submerged in water, reflecting the trees and sky. Two figures, possibly travellers, are visible on a bank in the middle ground.
