Kazimierz Zielenko's 'A Friends' Reunion' (1922) portrays a group of individuals in a surreal setting, blending realism with symbolic elements. The muted colour palette and precise rendering create a dreamlike quality.
Kazimierz Zielenko (1888-1931) was a Polish artist known for his portraits and genre scenes. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and later in Munich. His work often displays a blend of realism and symbolism, reflecting the artistic currents of his time. Zielenko's career was cut short by his early death at the age of 43. 'A Friends' Reunion' (1922) depicts a gathering of formally dressed individuals against an unusual backdrop. The figures, numbered for identification, are set against a surreal environment featuring a snow-capped mountain, a glass structure enclosing a sporting scene, and an abstract machine. The subjects are identified in a numbered list at the bottom left of the painting. The colour palette is muted, with browns, blues, and yellows dominating the composition. The painting's style is characterised by its precise rendering of the figures and the dreamlike quality of the setting.
