A surreal etching from Max Klinger's 'A Glove' series, depicting a glove as a triumphant chariot in a dream-like, symbolic landscape.
This etching belongs to the series 'Paraphrase on the Finding of a Glove', a cycle of ten works that established Max Klinger as a significant figure in late nineteenth-century German art. The narrative follows the artist's obsession with a lost glove, which he discovers at a skating rink. In this specific plate, titled 'Triumph', the narrative reaches a fever pitch of psychological intensity.
The composition features a large, anthropomorphised glove resting upon a bed of ornate, swirling foliage. A horse, rendered with classical precision, pulls the glove as if it were a chariot. The sun rises in the background, casting rays across the horizon and providing a stark, linear contrast to the complex, organic shapes in the foreground. Klinger employs a precise, academic etching technique to depict this bizarre, dream-like scenario. The juxtaposition of the mundane object with the heroic, mythological framing creates a sense of unease that anticipates the development of Surrealism.
Klinger was a master of the graphic arts, and his ability to render texture and light through fine lines is evident here. The contrast between the smooth, rounded form of the glove and the sharp, decorative curls of the surrounding vegetation demonstrates his technical control. This work functions as a visual exploration of desire and fetishism, themes that were unconventional for the period. By elevating a discarded accessory to the status of a triumphant deity, Klinger forces the viewer to confront the irrational nature of human fixation. The print remains a compelling example of how Symbolist artists used traditional techniques to explore the hidden, often darker, corners of the human psyche.
