A detailed Baroque still life by Jan Fyt, capturing the textures of game birds and a hare with dramatic light and shadow.
Jan Fyt was a master of the Flemish Baroque, particularly recognised for his skill in depicting animals and hunting trophies. This composition, A Hare and Birds, demonstrates his ability to render textures with precision. The central subject, a hare, is positioned with its fur captured in fine detail, contrasting against the softer plumage of the small birds scattered at its feet. Another pair of birds hangs suspended in the background, adding a sense of verticality to the arrangement.
Fyt employs a dramatic use of light and shadow, a hallmark of the period, to draw the eye across the various surfaces. The composition is grounded in a dark, atmospheric space, which allows the lighter tones of the animal fur and feathers to emerge. His technique involves a careful layering of paint to suggest the tactile quality of the subjects, from the coarse hair of the hare to the delicate wings of the birds. This work reflects the seventeenth-century interest in hunting scenes, which were popular among the aristocracy and the merchant class of the Low Countries.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on floral arrangements or breakfast pieces, Fyt specialised in the depiction of game. His approach to these subjects is objective, focusing on the physical reality of the animals. The arrangement appears casual, yet it is constructed to guide the viewer through the different elements of the hunt. The muted palette, dominated by earthy browns, greys, and soft whites, contributes to the sombre mood of the piece. This print captures the tonal range of the original oil painting, preserving the contrast between the illuminated subjects and the deep, receding background. It is a representative example of the technical proficiency found in Fyt's body of work, showing his command over light, texture, and naturalistic form.
