An early eighteenth-century Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu I, depicting a hawk and crane in a dynamic struggle.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu I captures a moment of predatory action. The composition focuses on the physical struggle between a hawk and a crane. Kiyomasu I, a member of the Torii school, is primarily known for his work in the theatre world of Edo-period Japan. This piece demonstrates the bold, muscular line work characteristic of the early Torii style, which often utilised thick, calligraphic strokes to convey energy and movement.
The print is a hand-coloured work, typical of the early eighteenth century before the development of full-colour printing techniques. The palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones and touches of red to define the plumage and the intensity of the encounter. The hawk is depicted with its wings spread wide, dominating the upper portion of the frame, while the crane is shown in a defensive posture. The artist uses stylised patterns to represent the feathers, turning the natural forms into graphic elements that fill the space.
Kiyomasu I was instrumental in establishing the visual language of the Torii school. His approach to figure drawing, whether human or avian, prioritised force and clarity. The print avoids unnecessary background detail, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the interaction between the two birds. This approach reflects the aesthetic priorities of the era, where the power of the subject matter was communicated through simplified forms and strong outlines. The work remains a clear example of the early Ukiyo-e tradition, showing how artists of the period adapted traditional subjects into the accessible format of the woodblock print.
