This cityscape by Albert Marquet depicts the port city of Marseille with simplified forms and a subdued palette. The painting captures the light and atmosphere of the bustling harbour.
Albert Marquet, a French Post-Impressionist painter, is known for his simplified, almost minimalist, depictions of cityscapes and harbour scenes. Although associated with the Fauvist movement early in his career, Marquet's work is characterised by a more subdued palette and a focus on capturing the atmosphere of a place. He travelled extensively, painting scenes from various locations, but he returned frequently to the port cities of France. 'A Horse in Marseille' presents a view of the bustling port city. The composition is divided into horizontal bands of colour, with the pale ground of the quay in the foreground, the blue-green water of the harbour, and the hazy lavender of the distant hills. Figures populate the scene, rendered with quick, economical brushstrokes. A horse and cart stand near the lower right, while people stroll along the quay. The buildings are simplified geometric forms, and the overall effect is one of quiet observation. The painting captures the light and atmosphere of Marseille, conveying a sense of place through colour and form.
