A striking 1897 lithograph by Maximilien Luce, originally featured in the 'Les Maîtres de l'affiche' series, advertising a performance at the Parisian music hall, La Scala.
This lithograph originates from the celebrated series 'Les Maîtres de l'affiche', a collection published between 1895 and 1900 that reproduced the finest examples of contemporary poster art. Maximilien Luce, primarily known for his Neo-Impressionist paintings and pointillist technique, demonstrates a different facet of his skill here. The work advertises a performance by the entertainer Mévisto at the Scala, a popular Parisian music hall of the period.
The composition features a central figure in a dark, voluminous cloak, rendered with expressive, heavy lines that suggest movement and theatricality. Below, two smaller figures are depicted with the characteristic attention to light and shadow that defines Luce's broader body of work. The palette is dominated by warm, golden-yellow tones that contrast with the deep reds and blacks of the figures, creating a visual hierarchy that draws the eye directly to the performer. The typography is integrated into the design, reflecting the graphic sensibilities of the late nineteenth-century French poster movement.
Luce's approach to this commercial commission retains the artistic integrity of his fine art practice. He avoids the overly decorative tendencies of some contemporaries, opting instead for a direct, almost gritty representation of the stage performer. The print captures the atmosphere of the Parisian nightlife, where music halls provided a venue for both social gathering and artistic experimentation. As a piece from the 'Les Maîtres de l'affiche' series, this print represents the intersection of fine art and mass-produced advertising, a hallmark of the Belle Époque era in France. The work remains a clear example of how artists of the period engaged with the urban environment and the burgeoning culture of public entertainment.
