A study of light and atmosphere in the Italian countryside by Henry Herbert La Thangue, featuring a silhouetted tree against a golden sunset.
Henry Herbert La Thangue, a member of the New English Art Club, spent significant periods in the Ligurian region of Italy during the early twentieth century. This work captures the specific atmospheric conditions of the Italian coast, focusing on the interplay between the dense, verdant vegetation of the valley and the warm, golden light of the setting sun. The composition is dominated by a single, silhouetted tree that provides a vertical anchor against the horizontal expanse of the rolling hills.
La Thangue was known for his direct observation of nature, often painting outdoors to capture the fleeting qualities of light. His technique here involves a textured application of paint, which allows the surface to catch the light and suggest the tactile quality of the foliage. The contrast between the deep, mossy greens of the valley floor and the amber sky creates a sense of stillness. Unlike the more polished academic works of his contemporaries, this piece reflects a move toward a more immediate, sensory experience of the environment. The brushwork is loose, prioritising the overall effect of light and colour over precise detail. This approach aligns with his broader interest in the rural life and geography of the Mediterranean, which became a primary subject for him after he moved away from the social realism of his earlier career in England. The work remains a clear example of his mature style, where the focus shifts from human activity to the quiet, unpeopled observation of the natural world.
