A haunting lithograph from Odilon Redon's 1883 series 'À Edgar Poe', featuring a mysterious, cocoon-like figure rendered in deep, atmospheric black tones.
This lithograph is part of the series titled 'À Edgar Poe', published in 1883. Odilon Redon, a central figure in the Symbolist movement, utilised the medium of lithography to explore the boundaries between reality and the subconscious. His work often features dreamlike, unsettling imagery that defies conventional narrative interpretation.
The composition depicts a singular, cocoon-like form resting upon a pedestal. The figure possesses a human face with closed eyes, suggesting a state of suspended animation or internal reflection. Redon employs a dense application of black ink to create a sense of atmospheric weight. The surrounding environment is sparse, featuring architectural elements that hint at a cavernous or ritualistic space. The light source appears to emanate from the chrysalis itself, casting a soft glow against the surrounding darkness.
Redon's technique relies on the manipulation of light and shadow, which he referred to as his 'noirs'. By layering charcoal-like textures through lithographic stone, he achieved a velvety depth that defines the mood of the piece. The work avoids literal representation, instead focusing on the psychological resonance of the subject. The title, while evocative, serves as a point of departure for the viewer rather than a definitive explanation of the scene. This print demonstrates the artist's ability to transform mundane objects into vessels for existential inquiry. The stark contrast between the illuminated figure and the encroaching shadows creates a tension that is characteristic of Redon's graphic output during this period. It remains a primary example of his contribution to late nineteenth-century printmaking.
