A classic sumizuri-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu, depicting a nocturnal scene with a man and his servant.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu captures a scene from the Edo period, depicting a group in transit. Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of ukiyo-e, known for his innovations in print technology and his focus on the urban culture of the time. The composition features a central male figure accompanied by a servant who holds a lantern, suggesting a nocturnal setting. The figures are rendered with clean, precise lines, a hallmark of the sumizuri-e style, which relies on black ink on paper without the addition of colour pigments.
The clothing of the figures displays a variety of patterns, from floral motifs on the robes to geometric stripes on the servant's attire. Masanobu demonstrates a mastery of balance, placing the figures against a minimal background to draw attention to their posture and the social hierarchy implied by their arrangement. The servant, positioned slightly ahead and carrying the light, provides a narrative element, guiding the viewer through the scene. The calligraphic signature and seal are integrated into the upper left, maintaining the aesthetic harmony of the print.
As a practitioner of the early ukiyo-e tradition, Masanobu contributed to the popularisation of prints that documented the daily lives of townspeople. This work reflects the technical constraints and stylistic preferences of the mid-eighteenth century, where the focus remained on line weight and composition rather than chromatic complexity. The print is an example of the graphic clarity that defined the period, offering a glimpse into the social customs and fashion of the era. It remains a clear representation of the artist's ability to convey movement and narrative through simple, monochromatic forms.
