A 1832 lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet, originally published in the French journal La Caricature, depicting a social scene in a public house.
This lithograph, titled Repas du peuple, was published in the French satirical journal La Caricature in 1832. Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet, a draughtsman and lithographer, produced this work during a period of significant political unrest in France. The image depicts a modest interior scene where a server carries a tray of food past a group of men seated at a table. One man reads a newspaper, while others observe the surroundings. The composition captures the atmosphere of a public house or communal dining space, rendered with the technical precision characteristic of Raffet's lithographic practice.
Raffet is often associated with his depictions of military life and the Napoleonic era, yet his contributions to political satire provide a different perspective on his technical range. The work employs a monochromatic palette, using varying densities of ink to create depth and shadow within the room. The figures are rendered with a focus on individual expression and posture, reflecting the social conditions of the early nineteenth century. The inclusion of the journal title and plate number at the top indicates its original purpose as a printed illustration for a wider audience. The work remains a document of the visual culture of the July Monarchy, where lithography became a primary medium for social commentary and political critique. The artist uses light and shadow to direct the viewer's attention toward the central figure, who moves through the space with a sense of purpose, contrasting with the more static figures seated at the table. This print offers a glimpse into the daily life and social dynamics of the period, captured through the lens of a skilled observer of the human condition.
