Frederic Remington, a prolific chronicler of the American West, produced this work during the later stages of his career. The painting depicts a vaquero, a traditional Mexican horseman, mounted on a horse against a sparse, arid backdrop. Remington employs a controlled palette to capture the harsh light of the desert, focusing on the textures of the rider's serape and the worn leather of the saddle. The composition is direct, placing the figure in profile to emphasise the silhouette of both horse and rider.
Remington spent much of his life documenting the vanishing frontier. His work often prioritised the physical reality of his subjects over romanticised notions of the West. In this piece, the vaquero appears weathered, his expression obscured by the shadow of a wide-brimmed hat. The horse, rendered with anatomical precision, stands patiently in the heat. The artist uses loose, confident brushwork to suggest the dusty ground, creating a sense of atmosphere without unnecessary detail.
This painting reflects Remington's transition from his earlier work as an illustrator for magazines to his more mature period as a painter.
