This abstract oil painting by Man Ray depicts a diagrammatic figure against a stark background, divided into sections filled with meandering lines. The work evokes a sense of alienation and fragmented identity, characteristic of Surrealism.
Man Ray, born Emmanuel Radnitzky in Philadelphia, was a central figure in both the Dada and Surrealist movements. He worked in a variety of media, including painting, photography, and film. His experimental approach and rejection of traditional artistic conventions made him a significant influence on 20th-century art. He spent much of his career in Paris. 'A Night at Saint Jean' presents a simplified, almost diagrammatic figure set against a stark background. The figure, rendered in outline, is divided into sections, each filled with differently coloured, meandering lines. The upper torso features red lines, the midsection brown, and the legs green. This internal mapping contrasts with the external form, which is rigidly geometric. The background consists of a dark sky above a grey, horizontally striated area, perhaps representing water or land. A dark triangular shape rises from the bottom centre, framing the figure and leading the eye upward. The overall effect is unsettling, evoking a sense of alienation and the fragmented nature of identity.
