A classic Ming Dynasty ink painting by Lin Liang, featuring two peafowl amidst bamboo, rendered in a refined, monochromatic style on silk.
Lin Liang was a court painter during the Ming Dynasty, recognised for his mastery of the bird-and-flower genre. This work displays his characteristic approach to ink wash techniques, where he balances controlled brushwork with more spontaneous, expressive applications of ink. The composition features two peafowl positioned amongst bamboo stalks, a common motif in Chinese art that carries symbolic weight regarding resilience and flexibility.
The artist employs a monochromatic palette, relying on variations in ink density to define form and texture. The plumage of the standing peacock is rendered with fine, precise strokes, while the surrounding bamboo and rock formations are executed with broader, more fluid movements of the brush. This contrast creates a sense of depth and atmosphere, typical of the Zhe School style with which Lin Liang is associated. The silk support provides a subtle, warm background tone that unifies the composition, allowing the darker ink tones to emerge with clarity.
Lin Liang moved away from the highly decorative, colourful styles favoured by some of his contemporaries, opting instead for a more direct and vigorous execution. His work often reflects a preference for the 'rough' brush style, which prioritises the energy of the stroke over meticulous detail. In this piece, the interaction between the birds and their environment is captured with economy, focusing on the essential qualities of the subjects rather than a literal transcription of nature. The result is a balanced arrangement that maintains a sense of quietude, characteristic of the scholarly aesthetic prevalent in the period.
