A Pair of Pheasants in the Snow by Ohara Koson is a woodblock print showcasing two pheasants in a winter scene. The artwork exemplifies the Shin-Hanga movement's blend of traditional Japanese techniques with Western naturalism.
Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist renowned for his bird-and-flower paintings (kachōga) in the Shin-Hanga style. This art movement, active primarily during the Taishō and Shōwa periods, sought to revitalise traditional ukiyo-e woodblock printing by incorporating Western influences and focusing on naturalistic depictions. Koson's work captures the delicate beauty of birds and flowers, often set within their natural environments. He initially trained in traditional Japanese painting but later transitioned to woodblock printing, collaborating with various publishers to produce a substantial body of work. His prints were particularly popular in Europe and America, contributing to the international appreciation of Japanese art. In "A Pair of Pheasants in the Snow", Koson depicts two pheasants in a snowy setting. One pheasant is shown in the foreground, its head bowed as it pecks at the ground. The bird's plumage is rendered with precision, showcasing a mix of dark green, brown, and gold feathers. A second, smaller pheasant stands further back, perched on a snow-covered mound. The background features a soft orange sky and a pine branch, adding depth to the composition. The use of delicate lines and subtle colours creates a serene and harmonious image, characteristic of Koson's style.
