This pointillist painting by Henri-Edmond Cross depicts a sun-drenched scene in Provence, with a view through a pine forest to the Mediterranean sea. The mosaic of colours creates a warm and tranquil atmosphere.
Henri-Edmond Cross, a French painter born in Douai, is associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement. He, along with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, developed a style known as pointillism, characterised by small, distinct dots of colour applied in patterns to form an image. This technique aimed to achieve maximum luminosity and colour mixing in the viewer's eye. Cross's work often depicts Mediterranean landscapes, reflecting his move to the south of France in 1891, where he lived until his death. 'A Pine Wood, Provence' exemplifies Cross's pointillist technique and his interest in capturing the light and atmosphere of the Mediterranean coast. The painting presents a view through a pine forest towards the sea. The scene is rendered using a mosaic of small, individual brushstrokes in a range of colours, from blues and greens to yellows and oranges. The composition is structured by the vertical lines of the pine trees, which frame the view of the figures on the beach and the sea beyond. The overall effect is one of dappled light and colour, creating a sense of warmth and tranquility.
