Henri-Edmond Cross, a French painter born in Douai, is associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement. This technique aimed to achieve maximum luminosity and colour mixing in the viewer's eye. Cross's work often depicts Mediterranean landscapes, reflecting his move to the south of France in 1891, where he lived until his death. The painting presents a view through a pine forest towards the sea.
