A woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicting Sakanoue no Tamuraro, a general from the Heian period, leading his troops into battle. The print showcases Yoshitoshi's skill in capturing dynamic scenes from Japanese history.
This woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) depicts Sakanoue no Tamuraro, a prominent general from the early Heian period of Japan. Yoshitoshi, a master of the Ukiyo-e style, was known for his dynamic compositions and his ability to capture dramatic moments from history and legend. His work often focused on warriors and historical events, reflecting an interest in the samurai culture and the stories of Japan's past. He is widely regarded as the last great master of Ukiyo-e. In this print, Sakanoue no Tamuraro is shown mounted on a white horse, leading his troops into battle. The scene is rendered with fine lines and a striking use of colour, typical of Japanese woodblock prints. The general is depicted in full armour, with a commanding presence that conveys his authority and skill as a military leader. The surrounding chaos of battle, with soldiers and arrows in flight, adds to the sense of action and drama. The print offers a glimpse into the world of Japanese military history and the artistic traditions of the Ukiyo-e period.
