A woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicting Tokuda Magodayû Shigemori, a figure from the Chushingura story. The artwork showcases Kuniyoshi's dynamic style and attention to detail.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) depicts Tokuda Magodayû Shigemori, a figure from the Chushingura story, also known as the Tale of the 47 Ronin. Kuniyoshi was a master of ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. His work is characterised by dynamic compositions and dramatic depictions of historical and mythical subjects. In this print, Tokuda Magodayû Shigemori is shown in a moment of intense action, drawing his sword. He is dressed in traditional samurai attire, with a patterned robe and distinctive black-and-white leggings. Behind him, a hawk perched on a branch adds a symbolic element, perhaps representing strength or vigilance. The red frame and floral details provide a contrasting backdrop to the central figure. The print includes text in Japanese, adding to the historical context and narrative of the image. Kuniyoshi's skill in capturing movement and emotion is evident in the figure's stance and expression.
