A textured depiction of urban life by American Impressionist Robert Spencer, capturing the architectural character of tenement housing.
Robert Spencer, a member of the New Hope School of American Impressionism, often turned his attention to the industrial and working-class environments of Pennsylvania. In A Row of Tenements, he captures a scene of urban life with a distinct focus on the interplay between architectural mass and atmospheric conditions. The composition is dominated by a block of brick buildings, rendered with thick, textured brushwork that emphasises the weathered surfaces of the structures.
Spencer employs a palette that balances the earthy, muted tones of the brickwork with the cooler, expansive blues of the sky. The sky itself is filled with billowing, cloud-like forms, painted with a sense of movement that contrasts with the static, repetitive nature of the tenement facade. Below, small figures populate the street, providing a sense of scale and human activity against the backdrop of the imposing buildings.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on idyllic rural scenes, Spencer found interest in the mundane reality of city dwellings. His technique involves a layered application of paint, which creates a tactile quality on the canvas surface. The light in the painting is directional, casting long shadows across the foreground and defining the edges of the buildings. This work reflects the artist's interest in the social fabric of early twentieth-century America, documenting the physical environment of urban residents without romanticising the setting. The painting remains a clear example of how the Impressionist approach to light and colour could be applied to subjects outside of the traditional pastoral or leisure-based themes.
