Description
A dramatic marine study by Alfred Stevens, capturing the raw energy of a coastal storm with heavy, expressive brushwork and a sombre, atmospheric palette.
Alfred Stevens, a Belgian painter known primarily for his depictions of Parisian high society, occasionally turned his attention to the sea. In this work, dated 1892, he captures the raw power of a coastal storm. The composition is dominated by a turbulent sky, rendered in heavy, dark impasto that suggests the weight of gathering clouds. A single lighthouse stands on a rocky promontory, providing a small, fixed point of reference against the chaotic movement of the waves below.
The brushwork is energetic and direct. Stevens uses thick applications of paint to describe the foam crashing against the shore, contrasting the white highlights of the water with the deep, earthy tones of the rocks and the bruised purple-grey of the atmosphere. A small vessel is visible on the horizon, struggling against the swell, which adds a sense of human vulnerability to the scene. The artist avoids fine detail in favour of capturing the immediate physical sensation of the weather.
This painting reflects the late-career shift in Stevens's practice, where he moved away from the polished interiors of his earlier work toward more atmospheric, painterly studies of nature. The palette is restricted to sombre tones, relying on the interplay of light and shadow to define the forms. It is a study of elemental force, focusing on the interaction between the solid coastline and the fluid, unpredictable sea. The signature in the lower right corner confirms the date of 1892, placing this work within the final decade of the artist's life, a period marked by his return to Belgium and a renewed interest in the coastal environment of the North Sea.
