This oil on canvas by William Merritt Chase, titled 'A Study in Curves', features a reclining nude figure rendered with soft light and a muted palette, emphasising the sinuous lines of the body.
William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) was an American painter known for his Impressionistic style and his role as a teacher. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and later in Munich, where he adopted a darker, more tonal style. Upon his return to America, Chase became a leading figure in the American art scene, teaching at the Art Students League and founding the Chase School of Art (later Parsons School of Design). He is celebrated for his portraits, still lifes, and urban scenes, which capture the atmosphere of late 19th-century America. 'A Study in Curves' presents a reclining nude figure, rendered with soft, diffused light and a muted palette. The model reclines on a dark cushion, set against a backdrop of warm browns and reds. Chase's brushwork is loose and painterly, creating a sense of movement and capturing the subtle gradations of light and shadow on the figure's skin. The composition emphasises the sinuous lines of the body, highlighting the curves and contours with delicate precision. The overall effect is one of quiet intimacy and sensual repose.
