A refined ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunchō depicting elegant figures near the Tokiwa Bridge in Edo.
Katsukawa Shunchō, an active member of the Katsukawa school during the late 18th century, produced this woodblock print capturing a scene of urban leisure. The title, A Thousand Autumns, Ten Thousand Years on Tokiwa Bridge, refers to a traditional expression of longevity and prosperity. The composition features a group of women, likely courtesans or fashionable townspeople, walking near the Tokiwa Bridge in Edo.
Shunchō is recognised for his bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women, which often display a grace similar to the works of Torii Kiyonaga. The figures are depicted with elongated proportions and elegant posture, characteristic of the aesthetic preferences of the period. Their kimono patterns are rendered with precision, showing the attention to textile design that was common in ukiyo-e prints of the era. The background includes the stone masonry of the bridge approach and a glimpse of the bridge structure itself, providing a sense of place within the city of Edo.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones, muted greens, and black ink to define the forms. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with the artist, particularly in the application of the woodblock layers to create the subtle textures of the garments. The scene functions as a record of contemporary fashion and social behaviour, documenting the refined atmosphere of the pleasure districts and public spaces of the time. The inclusion of the bridge serves as a framing device, grounding the figures in a specific architectural context while maintaining the focus on the human subjects. This work remains a representative example of the ukiyo-e tradition, documenting the intersection of daily life and artistic stylisation in pre-modern Japan.
