A 1861 woodblock triptych by Utagawa Yoshitora documenting the social activities of foreign residents in the port city of Yokohama.
This triptych by Utagawa Yoshitora, produced in 1861, captures the social atmosphere of Yokohama shortly after the port opened to international trade. As a work of Yokohama-e, it documents the curiosity of the Japanese public regarding the customs, dress, and leisure activities of Western residents. The composition is divided into three distinct panels, each depicting a different facet of life in the treaty port.
The left panel shows a theatrical performance, with spectators observing from a raised platform, while a horse-drawn carriage occupies the foreground. The central panel depicts a social gathering inside a building, where figures engage in dining and musical performance, contrasted with riders on horseback below. The right panel features a more active scene, with individuals on horseback and pedestrians navigating the area near a structure flying a flag. Yoshitora employs a clear, narrative style to organise these varied activities, using the traditional woodblock medium to record a period of rapid cultural exchange.
The print reflects the specific aesthetic of the Bakumatsu period, where the arrival of foreigners prompted a surge in artistic production aimed at satisfying domestic interest in the outside world. The figures are rendered with attention to the distinctive Western clothing of the era, including top hats, frock coats, and crinoline dresses. The colour palette remains consistent with the period, utilising mineral pigments that have aged to provide a muted, historical appearance. This work functions as a visual record of the intersection between Japanese urban life and the influx of foreign influence during the mid-nineteenth century.
