A detailed study by Johann Georg von Dillis, capturing a willow tree on Munich's Prater Island with the Isar River and local architecture in the background.
Johann Georg von Dillis, a central figure in Bavarian art, produced this study during his tenure as a court painter and inspector of the royal galleries in Munich. The drawing depicts a specific location along the Isar River, capturing the quiet character of the Prater Island. The composition is dominated by the gnarled, textured trunk of a willow tree, which occupies the foreground and provides a vertical anchor for the scene.
Behind the tree, the artist renders the Quellwasser footbridge and the distant silhouette of the hospital building with economical, precise strokes. Dillis utilised a combination of graphite and wash to create depth, allowing the warm tone of the paper to function as a mid-tone within the image. His approach to the natural world is observational and direct, avoiding the idealised or dramatic conventions common to the period.
This work reflects the artist's practice of sketching directly from nature, a habit that informed his broader contributions to German art. The focus remains on the interplay between the organic form of the willow and the man-made structures across the water. The drawing demonstrates his ability to balance technical precision with a sense of atmospheric observation. As an inspector of the royal collections, Dillis possessed a deep understanding of European art history, yet his own drawings often reveal a preference for the unadorned reality of the Bavarian countryside. This print reproduces the original paper texture and the subtle tonal variations of the wash, offering a clear view of the artist's hand and his methodical approach to capturing the Munich environment.
