A woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicting a young woman from the Kansei period playing with her cat. The print showcases a domestic scene, with attention paid to the patterns and textures of the woman's kimono.
This woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) depicts a young woman from the Kansei period (1789-1801) interacting with her cat. Yoshitoshi, a prominent figure in the late Edo and early Meiji periods, is recognised for his innovative approach to ukiyo-e, blending traditional techniques with modern sensibilities. He is considered by many to be the last great master of ukiyo-e. The print showcases a domestic scene, with the woman reclining and gently engaging with her feline companion. The composition is carefully balanced, with attention paid to the patterns and textures of the woman's kimono. The colour palette is muted, typical of ukiyo-e prints, with subtle gradations and delicate lines defining the forms. The print offers a glimpse into the daily life and aesthetic values of the Kansei period, reflecting the appreciation for beauty and harmony in everyday moments. The inclusion of the cat adds a touch of warmth and intimacy to the scene, highlighting the close bond between humans and animals.
