A refined 1904 work by Konstantin Somov, depicting a gallant, theatrical encounter in an autumnal setting, rendered in the artist's signature Rococo-inspired style.
Konstantin Somov, a founding member of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group, frequently returned to the aesthetic sensibilities of the eighteenth century. This work, dated 1904, captures a staged, theatrical encounter between a young man and a lady, set against an autumnal backdrop. The scene draws heavily from the Rococo tradition, echoing the gallant themes found in the works of Jean-Honoré Fragonard or Antoine Watteau, yet it is filtered through the distinct, slightly melancholic lens of the early twentieth-century Russian Symbolist movement.
The composition is carefully balanced, with the kneeling youth forming a diagonal line that leads the eye toward the lady, who sits in a pose of composed detachment. Her elaborate gown, rendered in shades of violet and lilac, contrasts with the dark, reflective surface of the youth's coat. The surrounding environment, featuring a pale moon and golden-hued trees, suggests a twilight hour, adding a layer of artifice to the romantic gesture. Somov employs a precise, delicate technique, using gouache and watercolour to achieve a surface that feels both polished and dreamlike.
Somov was known for his fascination with masks, masquerades, and the performative nature of social interaction. Here, the interaction between the two figures feels scripted, as if they are actors in a play rather than individuals in a spontaneous moment. The inclusion of the eighteenth-century costume serves to distance the viewer from the present, creating a space where history and fantasy merge. This print captures the technical precision of Somov's brushwork, preserving the subtle colour transitions and the specific atmospheric quality of the original paper-based medium. It is a representative example of the artist's ability to blend historical pastiche with a modern, psychological awareness.
